Iron is an essential mineral needed for mental, physical and emotional development in children. In both adults and children, iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, which transfers oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues to produce energy. Iron is also utilized by the brain to make several neurotransmitters including serotonin, our happy hormone, and melatonin, our sleep hormone. Iron is necessary for lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) to function properly and help fight illness and infections for a healthy immune system.
Iron is crucial for healthy growth and development of infants and children. Low iron negatively affects brain development and can lead to behavioral problems including tantrums, ADHD-like behaviours, and sleep problems. Iron deficiency is also associated with physical development issues like failure to thrive, short stature, and poor grades at school.
Signs and Symptoms of Low Iron:
- Dark under-eye circles
- Moodiness, irritability or tantrums
- Pale skin, lips, and eyelids
- Increased infections, colds, and flus
- Sleep disturbances like having a hard time falling asleep
- Becoming tired quickly or needing more naps
- Craving and eating ice, dirt, clay or other non-food items (pica)
- Poor appetite
- ADHD-like behaviours and/or tantrums
- Slow growth (short or small for age)
- Poor grades, low test scores
- Headaches
- Anxiety
- Teeth grinding
How Much Iron Do You Need?
The recommended daily intake for iron is a maintenance dose to help prevent iron deficiency in those with normal iron levels. The daily elemental iron amounts are:
- Children 7 months to 13 years – 10 mg iron daily
- Girls 14 to 18 years – 15 mg daily
- Boys 14 to 18 years – 10 mg daily
- Pregnancy – 30 mg daily
- Lactating – 10 mg daily
Elemental iron is the total amount of iron absorbed by the body. Always look for the elemental amount of iron in a supplement. If diagnosed with iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia, a healthcare provider will recommend a therapeutic dose as a treatment for anemia. Therapeutic doses are higher than a maintenance dose. The dosage listed on BioFe® iron products are maintenance doses. Get an iron blood test to find out your exact iron levels.
What makes BioFe® better than other irons? BioFe® uses a superior iron delivery system. The iron in BioFe is a vegan form called iron pyrophosphate, and it is micronized and microencapsulated to optimize absorption.
What is Micronized? Micronizing is a process that changes the surface area of the iron increasing the iron’s absorbability. Micronizing also makes it completely dispersible in liquids.
What is Microencapsulated? Microencapsulation is a process whereby the iron is encapsulated in a protective coating. This coating prevents the common side effects of iron supplements, like constipation, tummy upset, and gray teeth. Microencapsulation optimizes iron absorption by allowing the iron to travel intact, past the stomach, into the small intestine where iron is readily absorbed. BioFe® iron supplements can be taken at any time because the microencapsulated iron does not compete with other minerals, like calcium, that can inhibit iron absorption.
Microencapsulation also ensures that the iron tastes great!
Pure with Nothing to Hide BioFe iron supplements are formulated without harmful ingredients and do not contain sugar, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, soy, gluten, benzoates and GMOs
