Green tea, known for its antioxidant properties, plays an important role in weight loss. Green tea contains compounds that specifically contribute to thermogenesis and fat oxidation. These compounds contain the antioxidants known as flavonoids, including catechin and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).A recent study reported that 12 weeks of ingesting green tea extract containing catechins daily resulted in significantly lower body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, body fat mass and subcutaneous fat.Research conducted on overweight men demonstrated that EGCG alone was effective for fat oxidation, directly contributing to weight loss.In a French study, scientists discovered that green tea increased resting metabolic rate by 4%.In the same study, they also concluded that green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond what could be attributed to caffeine. Green tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via thermogenesis, fat oxidation or both.
